GALACTIC Program Overview
GALACTIC serves identified academically gifted students in grades 1-5 at the Gibbons GALACTIC Center located in the Hazelwood Learning Center.
Identified gifted students in grades 2-5 attend GALACTIC one day per week to enrich, extend, and accelerate their learning. Identified students in first grade attend GALACTIC on Thursday mornings.
Our weekly schedule services students on the following days:
- Monday- 5th Grade
- Tuesday- 4th Grade
- Wednesday- 3rd Grade
- Thursday- 2nd Grade
- Thursday mornings- 1st Grade (1/2 Day Program)
On Friday, GALACTIC's gifted specialists visit all 19 elementary buildings across the district to screen students in grades K-5 and identify other students for gifted services. Please refer to GALACTIC Screening Procedures on the left-hand menu for more information about how and when students are identified.
Students in grades 2-5 select their classes based on interests and personalized learning goals. First grade students are assigned thematic courses encouraging critical thinking skills, serving as a foundation for courses they take in later grades.
